Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment that is the most widely used evidence based practice for treating mental health issues like anger, anxiety and depression.  CBT focuses on developing problem solving skills changing unhelpful patterns of thoughts, behaviors, and emotion regulation.  CBT is problem-focused and action-oriented.  In CBT we focus on the here and now rather than decoding the past.  CBT is used to treat specific problems and the therapist's role is to help the client find and practice effective strategies to decrease symptoms. CBT is based on the belief that distorted thoughts and maladaptive behaviors play a role in the development and maintenance of psychological disorders, and that changing thoughts and behaviors can reduce symptoms.
